Issue 36 – Gosh! Golly!

Postby barryJA on Wed Nov 04, 2009 2:03 pm

Congratulations!

Issue 36 (out 3rd November) announces big changes. The Magazine is not only getting a new look, but also a new name and expanding into all the other graphics software as well. Great!

Presumably it will be bigger and better extending its boundaries to cover the whole subject of graphic art. It doesn’t mention if we’re getting more for our money or if the price is going up too.

Personally, whatever the price, I can't wait for 30th November for the launch.

wait a minute... the reason i subscribed was because it was triggered towards corel painter and learning it... and more so it was dedicated mostly to digital painting...
issue 36 would be my first issue of the subscription...

what's the point of this change?
since i have not yet received my copy of the issue can you share some info as to what software you are referring to and what kind of digital art!

shouldn't we have been informed about a drastic change like this as it sounds like from your post!

Hmm, I wonder if one or two (or three) of the magazines in the Corel/Imagine stable are being combined? I don't have issue 36 either so it would be interesting to know.

Rumor has it that this is the reason for editor silence...the Painter mag as we knew it is abt to allegedly go away.

These fellows really are too much.

Right! On page 9 is a small piece on the new magazine, then on page 42 there is a two-page spread telling nearly all.

The new production will cover everything they do now plus more, on other products such as “Photoshop, ArtRage, Sketchbook Pro and many more.”

It will start from Issue 37 and be called ‘Digital Artist.’ There is a new website - www.digitalartistdaily.com - advertised on the front cover which is non-operational as yet.

There is no comment about the price. They also say that existing subscribers will be contacted by letter and told more.

this is really sad...

there will be no focus... it is too wide... and one cannot assume that a person who owns one software will also have all the others... they are out of their mind to be doing this...

does this mean they plan to dissolve all other magazines such as photoshop creative, advanced photoshop, paint shop pro, so on and so forth to do with digital art... this sucks!

can someone officially comment on this... it sounds ridiculous...

Well, you've caught us! We've been waiting for the moment the first subscribers and regular buyers got their hands on issue 36 of the Official Corel Painter Magazine, and now we can finally let the cat out of the bag - phew!
Digital Artist will launch on 30th November and as well as focusing on Painter it has got a much wider remit in terms of the software products and art styles covered. As it's a magazine that's primarily about digital painting, Painter is of course a large part of it, and in addition to that we're covering other programs too. Our focus is on the techniques that the artists creating our tutorials use, which will enable you to follow the tutorials whether you use Painter, Painter Essentials, or any one of a number of other digital painting programs.
To answer sunilthakkar's question, the magazine is not an amalgamation of other Imagine titles. The much-loved Photoshop Creative, Advanced Photoshop and 3D Artist are still going strong and will continue to do so (Paint Shop Pro magazine was discontinued a year ago).

April, that's it? !

What about those of us who subscribed in good faith to the Official Corel Painter magazine
and are not interested in the new publication? Will we be receiving a refund?

And what about this site... the fact that it has basically been abandoned?
Irregular gallery updates, no pick of the week, no featured galleries, no one in charge....

Do not be harsh...remember, they have priorities and can only do so much! The stuff that was abandoned is, apparently, not important on the back end.

it's partly a relief to know that it still focuses on digital painting... as long as that remains the focus i might still be ok with it...

however, i do believe that subscribers should have been informed about this earlier... rather than through the magazine... specially new ones... i haven't even received my first issue and the magazine is changing!!! how weird is that... i have a couple of the earlier issues and have ordered the subscription on the basis of that... now i get something else!

there is no clear communication about whether we will receive a refund incase we don't want to continue with the new format (or new magazine all together)... can you please clarify this for us? there has to be a system for these things...

If the number of members to the forum and to the gallery, and the number of submissions, is an indication of the readership of Corel Painter magazine I can understand the need to broaden the appeal. I hope you don't become another ImagineFX as I do not need two of those? On the other hand there are areas of computer graphic art you have not approached. I just hope that you don't lose focus on the concept of ART. Its one thing to be an illustrator, quite another to be an artist! If the community should lose this source for fundamentals of creating computer art, as your approach has been, then you may find the artists looking elsewhere.

Just my first few thoughts...

Hi Yumahermit,

Without going into a debate about illustrators not being "artists" (or vice versa), I don't seem to remember any article on Painter's tools and techniques that could not be used by, and for, both.

Hi back to you joeparis (love that name),

I knew when I entered the 'illustrators' comment I would generate feedback. I just want to open up more dialogue. I for one never know which I am, just love creating, using the tools, and trying new techniques, even when it's crossing over from one application to another. I have not seen Issue 36 but really wonder what becomes of things like the entries in this forum and in the gallery? All those gallery comments, those cross the waters chats in the comments... That's what makes a community, hope it is not lost.

:)

It was all so important 2 1/2 years ago when they wanted to sell us their magazine.
Now, just abandoned cogs in the Imagine marketing machine.

So... does this space now become the Digital Artist site?
we painters will be buried in the onslaught.
