And i guess we loose the painter specific techniques and detailed articles on brushes/effects... but maybe all that was to be written is already covered in the past issues... maybe they are running out of material / or getting tired of recycling material...

i guess we could only comment once we see the new format in december...

Hello all,
Let me answer your questions about the new magazine and how it will affect you. Firstly, the website and forum will continue to run. Obviously there won't be things such as tutorial files or magazine competitions but the basic structure of you being able to upload images to your gallery and comment on other people's images will continue.

Although the new magazine will be featuring other software, there will still be a very healthy chunk of Painter content. It is not going to be another ImagineFX – fantasy and sci-fi will certainly feature from time to time but they won't be the main thrust. We will be presenting a wide range of styles to hopefully inspire you to try something different for a bit of fun and if not, at least give you something interesting to read and learn about.

Despite the tutorials using different software, they are all still based around teaching you how to paint better. Which is pretty much the thrust of the whole magazine – to show you what people are creating, get them to explain how they are creating it and to give you lots of ideas for your own artwork.

Obviously it will be different to having a dedicated magazine to your software of choice and I can assure you that we haven't taken the decision lightly. But I truly think (and hope) that you will like Digital Artist and still find plenty in there to keep you busy at your computers.

Hello all

I'm Lucy the Subscriptions Manager and just wanted to reassure you all of what is happening to your subscriptions to Painter with the changeover. We have written to you all (although with our diabolical postal service these may be in transit for a while) to explain fully but in essence we are doing the following:

All subscribers will receive issue 1 of Digital Artist at the end of the month - if you wish to continue your subscription after seeing the new magazine then you need do nothing. If however you no longer want to receive the new magazine you simply need to email/call our subscriptions hotlines (details below) with your details and we will refund you in full for all the non mailed Painter issues

It is worth noting that existing Painter subscribers who do continue with Digital Artist will be benefiting from a greater discount than new readers/subscribers as we are freezing your current prices as a thank you for all your loyalty to the magazine over its time. Standard Digital Artist discounts will be 30% UK (Painter is 40%) and USA/Canada will be £80 (Painter offers are £50)

Email: officialcorel@servicehelpline.co.uk
Telephone UK: 0844 848 8410
Telephone Overseas: +44 1795 414 611

Of course if you would like to cancel before receive the new edition then again just contact the Subs team and they will be happy to help

I hope this has helped to reassure you

It will be interesting to see what is produced. There are a number of digital painting magazines already but they mostly feature concept art, fantasy, games art, etc. It would be refreshing to see a magazine that features Painter, PS, Artrage, Sketchbook Pro, PaintTool SAI, (vector?) that does not involve endless drawings of robots and scantily clad women with enormous weapons. :P

Personally, I was beginning to find less useful material in Painter Magazine as I became more comfortable with the program. I have no interest in the articles about turning photographs into paintings (I know they have their uses for many other people).

It might be the case (it's certainly mine) that many artists and illustrators (and photographers) rarely limit themselves to one program when working. Taking images from Sketchbook Pro to Painter to Photoshop, for example, is a useful way of working and helps bypass some of the shortcomings (bugs) in certain applications. A magazine that pulls these together is very welcome.

thanks for all the clarifying...

i would very much like to try out the digital artist issue 1 to see if i would want to continue the subscription... i liked the fact that the painter magazine was one of the very few that focused on traditional media techniques being replicated digitally and had the paint like section which was enjoyable (to try and replicate a style of a painter that you like...) ... i hope that this continues... i would hate to see this go all sci-fi and new age or get into photo manipulations and composites of that sort... thats just me... it probably makes sense in terms of the company and the profitability bit to make such shifts... then in that case i just would get the refund and move on...

HOT DIGGITY! :D

I can hardly wait to see this! I'm VERY excited! I also love ImagineFX dearly (since fantasy/scifi is my artistic focus), so I'm glad to hear it's not going to follow their same route; part of why I liked OPM is because it brings other styles and genres to my table...stuff I wouldn't normally look at on my own. So I'm glad that's not going away.

Which reminds me, I need to finish something... >.> Too much to do, not enough time! Aaah!

Edit: Woops! That was an embarrassing typo...

Digital Artist will launch on 30th November . . .

You waste my time and come out with a -phew! Why not tell us before we invested time to compete for a publication that you knew was not! This extremely angry prior Corel customer is more than a bit upset by your dismissal of my value, the denigration of my time!!! You owe me! I am a paid professional and you lied!!

Your publication published a lie, held a fraudulent competition you had no intention of awarding! You lied in response to queries on your forums concerning the competition. You blatantly lied! To each and every one of us without qualm without hesitation without thought! Your editors / owners deliberately dismissed the value of our time!! How very honorable. I for one look forward to your new publication, knowing I can trust it to provide valuable information - YOU WOULD NEVER LIE TO US.(extreme sarcasm)

What a relief I did not subscribe ~ sorry I fell for the campaign to separate me from my most valuable time and effort. The lie you told with the promise of a competition you knew was not real and prize you knew would never be awarded as the publication was being killed! YOU WASTED OUR TIME AND SQUANDERED OUR EFFORT.

Blog here I come!!!

I am through. Won't be back. I do not support denigration of my worth.

Deja vu.

A couple of years ago I forked out around £50 to subscribe to a small magazine called Illustrator World. It was a magazine that was 100% Adobe Illustrator and looked perfect for my needs. Before I received my first issue it had metamorphosed into Layers Magazine which now only included Illustrator - about 15% - but the rest being taken up with the other Adobe Suite applications, Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, etc. Layers is not bad and I certainly use many of Adobe's stuff so I kept up the subscription. Many people were annoyed, including myself, but I think it was either Layers magazine or nothing; Illustrator World was on the verge of ceasing to be.

I wish Layers included a lot more of Illustrator (my favourite) and I hope Digital Artist includes a great deal of Painter as it's under-represented elsewhere.

Plus ca change?

Maybe Corel will think about another Official Corel Painter magazine elsewhere although they seem to have their hands full simply developing the software to a professional standard.

Tim O'Neil and John Derry have started a free (for now) online magazine called Digital Paint Magazine. They have an August and September issue out right now. Here's the web site:

www.digitalpaintmagazine.com

We'll have to see how it develops, but who knows.

Improv, thanks so much for the address to DPM. It is a very professional appearing magazine. It will be interesting to see how Digital Artists compares to DPM.

You're welcome, Yuma and Joe. They're only starting up, and I'm sure they want feedback and ideas. Another thing I like is that delivery is on internet time-instant! No snail mail to goof up your subscription. We'll see how the new version of CPOM goes-it might well be ok. Unlike certain people, I won't prejudge the it till I see one or two copies.
