Painter Magazine : Editor's Blog http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php en-gb Mon, 12 May 2008 14:23:13 +0100 Imagine Publishing Ltd http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/InfoOnRss.htm 15 Imagine Publishing http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/aries/images/zzblank.jpg http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php Elephant Paper Theodore Miller’s painting of this elephant caught my eye and made it to the pic of the week. I always think of how rough an elephant must feel, and the use of paper texture in this image gives the perfect effect. Although you don’t get to see much of the elephant, what you do see gives the impression of a dignified creature, with battered, aged skin. A well-deserved pic of the week, methinks! On a slightly different note (well, completely different!) I am on holiday for a week and a bit, so there might be some delay in the images being approved. Don’t panic if they don’t appear as soon as you think! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-05-12 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-05-12 Mon, 12 May 2008 14:23:13 +0100 In Focus Three Amigos After a bit of delay with changing the Pic of the Week (due to deadline and then Bank Holiday), I’ve picked one from the very talented Karen Bonaker. Her Three Amigos image instantly made me smile, with great use of composition. Having the two darker dogs flank the middle one makes them look like a cheeky gang who have been up to some serious mischief! Karen has also managed to paint lovely soft-looking fur that looks good enough to stroke. http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-05-07 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-05-07 Wed, 07 May 2008 15:43:30 +0100 In Focus Kitty Cat This week’s Pick of the Week is from Lillyana Antoneavic. Lillyana is a recent member to the gallery, and has already built up a nice portfolio of images. We thought this one was excellent, with lovely texture and a softness that works well with the subject matter. The colours help add to this feeling of softness, and the cat’s pink nose and green eyes stand out well from the rest of the image. http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-04-14 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-04-14 Mon, 14 Apr 2008 15:26:20 +0100 In Focus King of the world I was wondering whether you'd like to see a new feature in the magazine, which is an idea that has sprung up from the last readers' challenge. We have had so many entries that used the kingfisher photo, that I got to thinking whether it would be nice to show how different artists have interpreted the same photo. Maybe with a little breakdown of what they did and how it was done? If it's something you find useful we can make a regular thing of it. And talking of readers' challenges, specifically the challenge with the kingfisher, I'm afraid I made a mix-up with the dates, which meant a lot of entries came in after a winner was announced. I've decided to have two winners for that challenge and apologise for my terrible calendar skills. I'll put a full post on the forum later today to explain things. Have a good rest of the weekend! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-30 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-30 Sun, 30 Mar 2008 09:49:45 +0100 In Focus Easter holidays Ah, the chicks are chirping, the lambs are bounding and there are lots of lovely Easter eggs to be eaten! As the Easter holidays approach, I thought it worth pointing out that we won’t be in the office from the end of tomorrow (the 20th) until next Tuesday (the 25th). This will mean that any images you upload may not be approved until the Tuesday, so don’t worry if it takes longer than usual for them to appear. Hope you all have a lovely Easter holiday and see you next week http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-19 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-19 Wed, 19 Mar 2008 16:26:17 +0000 In Focus Check out our products! Good news for anyone who has missed an issue or is looking for a comprehensive digital art companion. We have produced two excellent products that could be just the things you’re looking for. The Complete Guide to Digital Painting is a 256-page bookazine that collates tutorials and features from past issues of the magazine. Costing £12.99, it is the perfect item for newcomers to digital art. Our other product is the Corel Painter Official Magazine eMag. This is an interactive DVD that holds the first 12 issues of the magazine. You can browse on an issue-by-issue basis, or use the search options to locate a certain tool or effect. The eMag costs £19.99 and both items can be bought from www.imagineshop.co.uk http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-03 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-03 Mon, 03 Mar 2008 11:59:58 +0000 In Focus Tutorial tries It’s been really nice seeing how some of you have been using the tutorials in the magazine. If you have a go at any of them, please remember to post them in your gallery. It doesn’t matter if you have used your own images and just applied the techniques – it’s still lovely to see what you do with the information! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-02-25 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-02-25 Mon, 25 Feb 2008 16:26:31 +0000 In Focus Competition gremlins Hello to you all. There really is an incredible array of images and styles, and I'm keen to promote your work in any way I can. So don't be shy – email me with details of anyone you admire or shine the light on your own creations and I'll keep the details for future excitements! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-01-13 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-01-13 Sun, 13 Jan 2008 17:49:42 +0000 In Focus Happy New Year! Like many other people, today heralds the first day back in the office for me, and like many other people I am finding it very difficult to adjust! Not reaching out for a chocolate every five minutes seems a bit weird and I think I may have lost part of my brain somewhere between Christmas Eve and New Years' Eve! But I have enough cells left to wish you and your loved ones a very happy New Year and to thank you for all the images and comments you have made over the past months. I look forward to seeing even more and want to see 10,000 images on here by the end of 2008! So what are you waiting for? Get painting! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-01-02 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-01-02 Wed, 02 Jan 2008 14:14:03 +0000 In Focus Just one more chocolate… Season's greetings to you all! I hope you have all been eating and drinking lots over the holiday season. I am writing this before packing some clothes for more trips to family and friends, but just wanted to say a quick hello and wish you all well. I'm back in the office on the 2nd January so don't be mad if I don't reply to emails beyween now and then! I hope you and your loved ones have a lovely New Year and will speak with you all soon. http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-26 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-26 Wed, 26 Dec 2007 23:05:21 +0000 In Focus Reindeer in Flight After a brief hiatus (I was helping Santa do stuff) it’s time for some more Christmas art! Lisa Peruchini sent in this excellent image of a reindeer on its way to some special Christmas activity and we had to include it. The red background is perfect for the season and the swirls add a very festive air to the piece. The reindeer itself is beautifully rendered and I especially love the small lines used for shading and texture. http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-19 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-19 Wed, 19 Dec 2007 18:41:30 +0000 In Focus Oh Oh! Cresta Johnson sent us this humorous Christmas image and you can also see it at a larger size in the gallery section. I think the reindeer has a brilliant expression on his face and I really like the shading. I just hope I'm not on the naughty list :-( http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-13 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-13 Thu, 13 Dec 2007 21:57:27 +0000 In Focus Happy Holidays Chet Phillips is one artist whose work I never tire of seeing, so I was delighted when he sent an image to use here. This one has his lovely colour palette and also check out the trees! Simple yet very effective. The domed composition also makes me think of a snow globe, which is just another thumbs up for this beautiful image. http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-10 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-10 Mon, 10 Dec 2007 17:11:02 +0000 In Focus An Angel’s Prayer The texture in this beautiful piece of art by Anne Hale is absolutely exquisite, and I really like the soft, blended feel of the curly clouds. The stars breaking outside of the frame add a great dynamic feel and the angel is a classic Christmas image. I also really like her facial expression and how she seems to be basking in the starlight. http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-10 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-10 Mon, 10 Dec 2007 17:10:22 +0000 In Focus Christmas Trees Marcia Fasy sent in this piece of Christmas art and it immediately appealed to my love of snow! I really like the whole composition and scene and the spindly twigs of the tree help give an extra feeling of snow. The star is a nice touch, too! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-10 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-10 Mon, 10 Dec 2007 17:09:47 +0000 In Focus Wishing you… Magazine regular, Cat Bounds, sent in this entry to spread some artistic love and peace! I really like the soft effect on the holly and also the subdued background. The paintbrushes look primed and ready for action, with lovely globs of paint on them. Well done! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-10 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-10 Mon, 10 Dec 2007 17:09:03 +0000 In Focus Technical hiccup Hello, it seems that my computer is not in the Christmas spirit. On Friday I trotted off home, safe in the knowledge that I had emailed the Christmas images for over the weekend and then was faced with a machine that wouldn’t let me access anything. Sooo, here are the three entries that were due to make a weekend appearance. Oh, and the one for today! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-10 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-10 Mon, 10 Dec 2007 17:08:22 +0000 In Focus Card of treats We received a very nice email from Richard (sorry, no surname) who sent us this image of a Christmas card. But there’s more to this than meets the eye. Go to http://www.rapartz.com/holiday07/index07.htm and roll over the card to find some juicy content! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-06 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-06 Thu, 06 Dec 2007 17:51:05 +0000 In Focus Snowman Kenneth LaPlante sent us a bumper crop of entries, but I particularly liked this snowman painting. His cheery face is how I feel when I think of Christmas and the soft, curvy brush marks give a friendly mood to the image. I was also impressed with how round the snowman looked – just a bit of shadow makes for a very three-dimensional effect. At least this snowman will never melt! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-05 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-05 Wed, 05 Dec 2007 21:31:12 +0000 In Focus Christmas Morning Cocoa Steve Stanley offered this image up to our holiday collection and we couldn’t resist including it! The colours just scream Christmas and the idea of a lovely hot cup of cocoa is just the thing to make you feel warm inside. Apart from the general mood and composition of the painting, we were also impressed with the smooth skin and realistic fur trim to the hat. http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-04 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-04 Tue, 04 Dec 2007 10:55:12 +0000 In Focus Central Park Bird Kim Treffinger entered a snowy scene based on a photo taken in Central Park during last year’s Valentine’s Day ice storm. Despite being stranded in the city for six days, Kim took the opportunity to take some beautiful photos – and this one has been turned into a Christmas card! I loved the colours in this image and how it captures the perfect winter’s day. Just goes to show you never know when a creative opportunity will present itself… http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-03 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-12-03 Mon, 03 Dec 2007 19:45:24 +0000 In Focus Christmas Angel Barbara Hartsook is the artist behind our second holiday image. She has sent over a painting of an angel that sits by her computer at Christmas time. I like the mixture of soft paint and black lines – giving the image an almost animated quality. The black background makes the light dusting of snow even more effective. It’s a lovely image and has a deserved place in our painted holiday countdown! Kicking things off is Marcelo Chiarella with his painting of a patchwork Christmas tree his sister made a few years ago. I love the warmth in the image and also how the different layers of tree look like iced gingerbread! I am a bit of a Christmas freak and I’m sure there are others out there who love the holiday season as much as I do. So I had a little idea. I was wondering whether any of you would like to supply holiday-fuelled paintings that I could display in the blog each day in December? Kind of like an advent calendar only instead of chocolates, you get art! I appreciate that everyone is busy, but if you fancy having a go, email me and I’ll see if there’s enough people. I just wanted to write a few words about the ratings system on the gallery. These are a way of quickly leaving feedback on an image and a way of rewarding a piece of work you really like with a high score of 3 or above. They are not to be used as a way of marking down other people’s work so your own art moves up the rating scale. We can track who gives what ratings and if someone is abusing the system we will delete his or her account. This is a fun place for people to share their love of Painter and creating art. Anyone who harms this will be removed. http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-10-09 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-10-09 Tue, 09 Oct 2007 14:48:19 +0100 In Focus Four thousand and counting! It shouldn’t take very long and will make the site even better than it is at the moment! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-05-14 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-05-14 Mon, 14 May 2007 12:08:36 +0100 In Focus Account maintenance Now that our web community is getting bigger and bigger, we’re going to be doing all we can to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible. Part of this involves maintaining user accounts and you can help us! Please make sure you activate your account within one month of setting it up. Any accounts not activated after a month will be deleted, so activate yours today! Hope you all have a great weekend and speak to you next week. http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-05-04 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-05-04 Fri, 04 May 2007 12:40:22 +0100 In Focus Hello one and all! Hope you have all been keeping well while I’ve been gone. It’s lovely to see all the new users and artwork on the site – although it’s going to take me ages to catch up on who everyone is! And talking of artwork, I have the winner of the first creative challenge. It’s Lynne Mitchell, who painted a beautiful blossom image. See the winning entry in issue 4 and also see some of the other submissions. Ooo, and don’t forget to enter the new challenge! We love seeing your work http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-05-02 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-05-02 Wed, 02 May 2007 20:00:06 +0100 In Focus Leaving on a jet plane… Hello! I just wanted to let you all know that I am going to be out of contact for the next two weeks – I am going to be having a lovely time running around Seattle and Vancouver like a crazed banshee, taking loads of photos that I will bore you with for the next year’s worth of challenges. Speaking of which… I’ll be announcing the winner of the first challenge when I get back on the 30th April, so see if you scooped the prize! Take care xx http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-04-13 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-04-13 Fri, 13 Apr 2007 15:39:59 +0100 In Focus Watercolour challenge I find it interesting that most Corel Painter users seem to gravitate towards the oil or pastel brushes. Do any of you use the watercolour options? If you do, let me know. I'm planning a watery extravaganza! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-04-10 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-04-10 Tue, 10 Apr 2007 18:59:09 +0100 In Focus Your inspiration One question that artists are always asked is what their inspiration is. So now I'm asking you – is your muse other artists, people, films, places… whatever it is let us know. http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-04-09 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-04-09 Mon, 09 Apr 2007 16:43:14 +0100 In Focus Get involved! It’s good to see how popular the Gallery section of the site is becoming, but don’t forget about the magazine. We’re really keen to include as much work from readers as possible, so drop me an email (jo.cole@imagine-publishing.co.uk) if you’d like to appear in print. http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-04-02 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-04-02 Mon, 02 Apr 2007 21:06:39 +0100 In Focus Look upwards… …and you will see details of issue two, which is fresh on the shelves today! There’s loads in here for fans of brushes and you can expect gorgeous artwork as well, such as Katarina Sokolova’s stunning cover image. To get a taster for some of the content, head over to the ‘About the mag’ section and download some PDFs. Enjoy! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-29 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-29 Thu, 29 Mar 2007 18:00:33 +0100 In Focus See what’s coming There’s a general rule in magazine publishing that you should never disclose what you’re working on or what content is in an upcoming issue. Unfortunately we’re not very good at keeping secrets, so if you pop over to the forum from Wednesday, you’ll be treated to little teasers about what you can expect to find in issue 2 of the magazine! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-20 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-20 Tue, 20 Mar 2007 19:33:40 +0000 In Focus Work in progress Everyone gets to the stage where the painting they are working on just doesn’t make any sense. That’s why we have a Work in Progress section on the magazine forum, so you can upload your in progress shots and get constructive feedback from others. You’ll find it in the Feedback section, so go to www.paintermagazine.co.uk/forum http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-16 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-16 Fri, 16 Mar 2007 12:34:16 +0000 In Focus Clone ranger Okay, so issue two isn’t due to go on sale for quite a while yet (29 March to be exact) but I really wanted to tell you about one of the tutorials. It’s by Jeff Johnson (who was featured in issue one’s Readers’ Gallery) and it’s about cloning a photo and getting the effect of oil glaze. I think some people are quick to snub the Clone tool, but this tutorial shows that it is actually a really creative technique. So make sure you don’t miss out! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-14 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-14 Wed, 14 Mar 2007 18:48:25 +0000 In Focus Book 'em Danno I need some help (insert own joke here). I am convinced that there must be loads of really good Painter books, but I’m buggered if I can find them. So this is a call to you all – let me know of any helpful books you’ve found and I’ll pass the details on. It doesn’t matter how obscure they may be – inquiring minds want to know! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-13 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-13 Tue, 13 Mar 2007 18:09:32 +0000 In Focus And another one bites the dust Well we’ve just sent issue 2 off to the printers all safe and sound and are now starting on issue 3! It’s really nice seeing how the magazine is developing and deciding what bits work and what bits can be improved. It’s also good to see your feedback from issue 1 – rest assured we’ll take your comments and ideas on board. http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-12 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-12 Mon, 12 Mar 2007 17:29:34 +0000 In Focus The best artists I watched a TV programme on Sunday (I promise I do other stuff than just watch TV) about L S Lowry and I was blown away by some of his paintings and sketches. I never knew he had so much scope and his portraits are amazing. So I’ve decided that every now and then, I’ll mention any artist that has impressed me and we can all have a look at them. If you have a favourite artist that you’d like to share with the world, let me know and I’ll mention them too! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-08 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-08 Thu, 08 Mar 2007 18:16:42 +0000 In Focus Normal service will resume shortly (well, now) Apologies for the slight blips occurring on the website in the past couple of days – we have upgraded to a shiny new server and everything was being copied over. If you’ve had trouble accessing links or content, it was no doubt because the link was in one place while the content was in another! But all is good now, so enjoy the site and upload your images! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-07 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-07 Wed, 07 Mar 2007 12:27:06 +0000 In Focus A question of style I caught the end of a TV programme last night about an artist who spends a maximum of one hour on every painting he does and his work was amazing. It got me thinking about artistic styles and how you go about finding your technique. So I’d like to hear from anyone out there about their working practices. Is you technique instinctive, does it change according to subject or is it a case of you still haven’t found what you’re looking for? Let me know and I hope you all have a great weekend. Speak to you Monday! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-02 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-02 Fri, 02 Mar 2007 16:39:48 +0000 In Focus Make your mark I'd love to say that today saw us spending long and complex hours planning the magazine in finite detail but the truth is we spent most of it creating images to upload to the gallery section! It's great to see some of you joining in and I can't wait until this becomes a thriving community of eager artists. http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-01 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-03-01 Thu, 01 Mar 2007 18:41:37 +0000 In Focus Website goes live! A very warm welcome to this new website and also the very first Editor’s blog! It is our hope that this site will expand upon the content in the magazine, give you a chance to show what you can do with Corel Painter and also create a friendly community for users to come and meet like-minded souls. We’re all very excited about how the site can grow and develop and we look forward to finding out more about all of you! http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-02-28 http://www.paintermagazine.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2007-02-28 Wed, 28 Feb 2007 17:45:40 +0000 In Focus
