Picture Name : Woman in a Wimple

Woman in a Wimple

Woman in a wimple is based on a 15th century portrait of a young wife (not a nun) that was painted by the Master of Flémalle (now thought to have been Robert Campine). I was struck by how cute the face wrapped by the wimple is. In the original the facial expression is more severe; so I relaxed it a bit. I left out the body for a more modern effect. I tried to compensate for what I thought was damage to the original (cracks, fading, yellowing etc).

The image was created in Painter X. The original document size is 2261 x 2086 pixels at 300 ppi. It was reduced with “bicubic sharper”  in Photoshop CS3 to 1110 x 1024 pixels at 72 ppi to meet this website’s requirements.

Only one word, a real masterpiece. I love classic paintings of Low Countries and I am familiar by its related history. Woman in wimple is faithful to this precious heritage.

You hit this right on the money. I can't think of any recommendation, good or bad. If you could bag talent like groceries they'd need to restock aisle five. :)

Excellent stuff. I love the smooth texture and the fabric is folded to perfection.

Posted 117 months ago

PIerre says:

Thanks, Jo. Remember that the initial hard work was done by Robert Campin. I just copied and changed things here and there.

Amazing work, Pierre. I like the way the figure pops-up. The fabric and skin treatment is beautiful. Just a hint: if you like to redimension the work yourself in order to meet the website´s requirement, be aware that the maximum resolution allowed is indeed 1024x1024 pixels and not 1280x1024 as stated. If you see the properties of your "Woman in a Wimple" in the full size, you will realize that it was resized down to 1024x944. Anyway, just to give you that hint.

My first time visiting your gallery and my eye was drawn straight to this painting a stunning piece.

Posted 112 months ago

PIerre says:

Thank you both for your comments, John and Phillip. John, it seems like our references differ. I based the image on Robert Campin's work, tempera on oak, ca 1435, simply called, "A Woman." Refer to the website of the National Gallery (www.nationalgallery.org.uk)and search "Campin".
